SYNOPSIS

With surrogacy costing up to $70,000 in the US compared to only $12,000 in India, many Western women are outsourcing pregnancy abroad.
It's a multi-million dollar industry that sees rural Indians receive the equivalent of 10 years' salary.
Over the course of nine months, we follow the lives of two women, who in each other seek solutions to the problems of poverty and infertility, and explore whether it's a relationship that is exploitative or mutually beneficial.
We examine their reasons for choosing cross continent surrogacy, and hear of the legal and emotional battles they can face.
The programme is both touching and revealing. The 'relationship' expected of each by the other won't always match and the language barrier doesn't help.
The social mother - the one who will bring up the child - must go through a full pregnancy but with a womb that's thousands of miles away.
Equally the surrogate must live through the term knowing that, while she participates in nature's greatest gift, the result of her labours will become someone else's responsibility just days after she delivers.
Away from these deeply personal stories many question the morality of international surrogacy, where rich meet poor in what's usually a one-time deal.
Defending the criticism is Doctor Patel, Director of the Akanshka Clinic, nicknamed 'cradle of the world'.
She believes the surrogates are empowered to change their lives, but is this really a choice when these same women can't afford to educate their own children, ultimately what role does money play?

Life with the twins & Mark
Elle/Twin A |
Life with the 3 children has been interesting over the past couple of months. Since we have been back at home, Mark continues to go to daycare full time, and we have finally hired a nanny who we are just thrilled to have in our home. Our nanny is a pro, and we are learning a lot from her. Mark is no longer asking me to send his siblings back home on the plane, but will often inquire about there whereabouts, if he doesn't see them in his periphery. The twins are not yet sleeping through the night, but at least they sleep for 3 1/2 to 4 hours straight. Alec weighed in at 4 pounds and now he is close to 10 pounds. Elle weighed in at 5 pounds and she is close to 9 pounds. Elle is the quiet one, and you barely know she is even there, but Alec makes up for both of them. We call him the drama king.
Colin and I think this time was easier for us dealing with the twins, than it was dealing with Mark as a baby. We knew what to expect and we were organized. We decided that we would not kill ourselves and feed every two hours, unless the twins woke up on their own. They never did wake up every 2 hours, and that give a little breather. We feed both of the twins together and this helps to keep them both on a good schedule. As older parent's I must say we are not doing to bad.
After the California trip, it looks like I will be headed by to Anand as well as New Delhi with clients. If I have time, I'm thinking about making a side trip to Jaipur to do a little bit of shopping because I have come to love the textiles from India. Hopefully, the monsoon season will still be at bay for my arrival.
We are headed off to California for a month, and the entire family will be going as Colin will be on a teaching assignment. The twins will be meeting their cousins who they have not yet met, as well as their Aunt & Uncle. We will also be seeing a number of friends who have also had babies that were born in Anand, or friends with babies on the way in Anand.

Twin Prep!!
Our departure date is December 19th, so we are hoping that the twins stay put until we arrive. This will be our first time flying Turkish Air. When I told Colin, that we would be flying Turkish Air, he immediately said that he heard not to long ago that one of there plans had gone down , so I'm feeling a little nervous. The price of tickets at this time of year for India were outrageous and this was the best deal that we could get. We will have a layover for 1 1/2 in Istanbul, then we will arrive in Mumbai. I have been downloading all sorts of educational games on my Ipad for Mark. Mark LOVES my Ipad, that of course he says is his.
Christmas will be in Anand India, and I'm sure we will share some festivities with many the friends that we have made along the way, as Gujarat has a very high Christian population. I did download Susan Boyle's new Christmas album, and I have Josh Groban's Christmas album. I have been putting of work all day, so I better blog off. I will be blogging while in India for those who want to follow along.

Missing my boy's!
I'm back in India, and I'm at the Madhubhan Resort in Anand. It was so great arriving yesterday and seeing so many people that I have come to know. Today will be a day when I just take time to reflect and possibly get in a bathing suit and hang out by the pool. Yesterday I got to hang out a bit with Dr. Patel and took photos of some of the surrogates while they were being scanned. Currently there are over 60 pregnant surrogates, and Anand is busy as ever.
I'm missing Colin and Mark, but I'm sure that they are well and that my neighbor's are all helping out.
I will blog more tomorrow....right now I'm looking for more coffee.
